Far Cry Fly, What's it mean?
Far Cry Fly is an original Energetic Acoustic Rock act based out of Connecticut. You can read
The official Far Cry Fly Press Kit bio, over here.
Many of you have asked us the story behind our band name, so this is it.
Lori meets Jeff, Jeff Meets Lori
Well, it all started on a semi-rainy Halloween night about 5 years ago, when Lori met Jeff.
Consequently on the same night, Jeff met Lori. There was magic in the air.
Somewhere among the crowded 1 bedroom apartment, someone screamed:
"We're all going to die."
These words, of course have nothing to do with the story. They probably have something to do with
someone digesting too much, or too little, of a foreign substance that shouldn't be consumed in small
one bedroom apartments on Halloween.
Anyway, from far across the room, snippets of a conversation came floating into view:
"Wedding"
"Jello"
"Singer"
"Scissors and Handcuffs"
What was that about singing? Jeff tried to force his way through some random party-goers, such as
a Central Connecticut Cheerleader and some guy dressed up as the KISS bassist. Making his way
to the couch, where he found a girl trying to squeeze under it. This girl was not Lori and
the couch was not high enough for someone to squeeze under.
Lori was sitting on the couch, cuddling in the arms of some guy in a white lab coat
with blacked out teeth and mussed up hair. The man was chatering on some unknown
topic. Jeff interrupted.
"Did I hear something about someone singing?"
"Umm.. Yeah, that was me."
"So, tell me me about it."
Two hours later, Jeff got Lori's phone number without having a refrigerator on his head.
The Audition
Jeff went home and started doing research. He called everyone he knew that might know Lori.
He called everyone he knew that couldn't possibly know Lori. He called people he didn't know
who also didn't know Lori. No one knew the answer to the important question, who was that one-armed
masked man anyway? Maybe we'll never know.
Anyway, back to the story, Jeff called Lori and invited her to audition with Jeff's band. She
said okay and came to the basement studio on fateful Thursday night, two weeks after the
initial meeting. This room was even smaller than the crowded 1-bedroom apartment. It had
less people, but more musical equipment than should ever be allowed to fit into such a small space.
One wall was covered with dust covered amps of all shapes and sizes, and another had a drumset.
The room was shared with a huge stack of dusty, unused gardening books whose origins were
unknown. Five of us (did I mention there were five?) squeezed into this space that is no bigger
than a thimble.
Lori sang without music and it didn't suck. Then the band played through Bryan Adam's Summer of 69.
If you want one song designed for a female voice, this is it. They all sucked horribly, but you
couldn't tell because of the massive amounts of feedback. Lori joined the band nonetheless, because
no one else could sing at all. It was a powerful moment when we asked her to join the band. People
were teary and Jeff even cried.
The Rest of it
Over the next six months, they lost a drummer to another band, the lead guitarist to a girl who
lived far away, and the bass player just wandered out west one day on the sunny side of the
street, never to be seen again. After 6 months of searching for new members, they started
gigging without a band. Jeff had a guitar and Lori had a tambourine. Jeff started playing
with effects and developed a wicked awesome acoustic guitar distortion. Then Lori added some
bongos. And a couple of congas. Then a cymbal on a stick so Lori could hit it with her hand,
and finally her hands developed callouses.
A year later they finally started to get good.
You should see them now. How time flies.
So, what does Far Cry Fly mean already?
Far Cry Fly is a three word phrase that demonstrates where we want to go with our music.
A FAR CRY is a longshot. Making a living at music is the longest shot of them all and very few
people every become big stars like Brittany Spears and Michael Jackson. Many bands like The Nields and
Moe grow to be huge regional successes, but never quite making it to the cover of Rolling Stones.
When you FLY you travel great distances. To make it in the music industry you must travel
great distances. The trick is to remember that when are landing a hangglider, you have to keep
your legs running. If you keep them stiff, they will break as they hit the ground.
Far Cry Fly means that we are willing to travel great lengths to accomplish our goal
of making a living off our music. With that said, we hope to see you out at a show.
Note: Far Cry Fly does not encourage the use of substances that will make you see, instead
of hear, a conversation.
